Our great grandparents had worse traffic to deal with! Cars, bicycles, horses, street cars and lots of pedestrians on the roads.

Fewer people could afford cars, so they were walking... making it difficult for the few with cars to drive safely... since the photos and old movies show that pedestrians didn't stay off the roads or racetracks, give cars space, etc
